Jeffrey Carlberg is the new head football coach at Centennial High School.

Carlberg, who served as the defensive coordinator at Alpharetta the last two years, replaces Jeff Measor, who resigned at the end of the season to focus on finishing his doctorate.

Centennial was 24-28 under Measor. Last year the team finished 5-6.

What a different a year makes!

Last year, McEachern and Hillgrove (6-0) put-up 112 points in a 64-48 win by McEachern. Friday night, it was all defense as Hillgrove beat the Indiana 12-10 in a battle of unbeatens. McEachern entered the game as the top-ranked team in Class AAAAA and ranked #22 in the nation by MaxPreps.

The difference in this one was a safety in the fourth quarter when McEachern's punter kicked the ball out of the end zone with 3:48 to play.

So who'll be #1 when the new rankings come-out tomorrow?

Grayson and Camden County are both unbeaten and nationally-ranked.

Georgia High School Football Huddle

The death of two Georgia high school football players this week has resulted in Atlanta Public Schools canceling all afternoon outdoor student activities, including football, until after 6PM through the end of this week.

With the heat index spiking to between 105 and 110 degrees, some coaches have moved practices indoors. Grady High School in Atlanta was one of those schools, and you can view that story from the CBS affiliate in Atlanta below...

Roswell HS Promotes Assistant Coach to Head Football Coach

After eight years as an assistant, Justin Sanderson is now the head coach at Roswell.

Sanderson takes over for Leo Barker, who resigned at the end of last season. Barker was 22-12 in three years after taking over for Tim McFarlin, who led the Hornets to a co-championships in the AAAAA championship game in 2006.

Former Roswell head football coach Tim McFarlin is the new head man at Blessed Trinity.

In 10 years at Roswell, McFarlin was 82-43-1. He led the team to 2006 state championship game where the Hornets finished as co-champs after a 14-14 tie against Peachtree Ridge.

Peachtree Ridge's best play Saturday at the Corky Classic was a timeout.

The Lions called a time-out just before McEachern booted a 47-yard field goal with seven seconds left that would have tied the game at 24 and sent the game into overtime. Thanks to the timeout, McEachern kicker Nicholas St. Germaine had to try the kick again, and this time he missed to give Peachtree Ridge a season opening win.

Georgia Pastor Doesn't Like Nickname Demons for Warner Robins High School

We're one week into the Georgia high school football season and the biggest story in newspapers across the state was a Warner Robins pastor being upset that the nickname of the Warner Robins football team is the Demons.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution's Rhonda Cook takes a look at why Pastor Donald Crosby wants the four-time state champs to have a different mascot.

One day after Crosby announced he was circulating a petition to get rid of the Demons moniker, supporters released their own petition to "Save Our Mascot". As of today, 3,628 people had signed the petition. No word on how many signatures Crosby has gotten.

An unofficial count shows that 32 schools in America carry the Demons nickname; there are six Blue Demons; one Golden Demons and one Lady Demons.

Having lived in Atlanta for two years, there's no doubt in my mind that Georgia has some of the rabid high school football fans in the country.

The biggest thing that I learned about football in the south is that spring practice is a big deal.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution is also one of the best newspapers in the country to quench high school football fans' thirst for high school football knowledge during the off-season.

This spring, the AJC has put together a series called 30 in 30, which looks at some of the top teams in the state. Chamblee Names Soza as New Head Football Coach

After a very successful five year stint as an assistant coach at Atlanta-Carver, James Soza has his first head coaching job at the age of 28.

Soza was named Chamblee High School's new head coach earlier this week. The Dunwoody Crier looks at the job ahead for Soza, who will be trying to lead the Bulldogs to their fourth straight post-season berth.

The Dalton Daily Citizen is reporting that former players Matt Land and Preston Poag are the finalists for the vacant Dalton Catamount head coaching position.

School officials hope to select a new coach by the end of April. The job opened-up in February when former head coach Adam Winegarden resigned.

A couple of weeks after signing a scholarship to play football at Vanderbilt, the Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that McEachern running back Rajaan Bennett is dead after an apparent murder-suicide at his family's home.

Northside-Warner Robins Head Coach Resigns After 41-Years

Conrad Nix is stepping down after 41-years as a head football in Georgia and Alabama.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the Northside-Warner Robins head man resigned Tuesday. Nix ended his career with a record of 300-105, which included 40 wins at the beginning of his career when he coached in Alabama.

Model High School has hired the former Pepperell and Fitzgerald head coach to be its new head football coach. The Rome News-Tribune reports that Hunnicutt takes over the program that finished 1-9 last season. Hunnicutt is 14-wins shy of 200-wins in his career.

Friday night's Class AAAA battle between defending champ Tucker and Southwest DeKalb really wasnt' a battle after all. SW DeKalb took it to the champs in a 26-0 victory. Now on back-to-back weeks, the Panthers have been the 2008 champ and runner-up (Marist).

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that SW DeKalb's defense shutdown Tucker's high power running game. Tucker came in averaging 260 yards a game. Friday night, the DeKalb "D" only allowed the Tigers 95 yards on the ground.

Valdosta High School Football Coach Won't Be Back in 2010

When it comes to high school football, there may not be a more pressure packed job in America than the one in Valdosta. For the fourth time since 2002, America's winningest football program will be searching for a new head coach.

Earlier this week, Rick Tomberlin was informed that he won't be brought back for next season, although he will finish the season as the Wildcats head coach. Last weekend, Valdosta suffered a huge 57-15 loss to crosstown rival Lowdnes.

Tomberlin, who led Washington County to three state titles, is currently 19-20 with the Wildcats, which included a 1-9 record in his first season in 2006. His career record as a head coach stands at 219-100.

Today the Valdosta Daily Times takes a look at how the community and the coach are reacting to the news of Tomberlin leaving at the end of the 2009 season.

Aside from X's and O's, the Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe high school football team is now dealling with the First Amendment as it prepares for tomorrow night's road game against Ridgeland.

The Warriors are getting a lot of attention this week, but not for their 4-1 record on the field, but the and the signs the team runs through at the start of the game.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, school officials are no longer going to allow the team's cheerleaders to make banners that contain biblical verses, that have become tradition at the northwest Georgia high school since 2003. According to the report, one Fort Oglethorpe resident made a verbal complaint that the religious signs displayed by a public school violates a federal law.

In closing, I certainly don't want to insert myself into the middle of the controversy, but it seems to me that the person that complained about the sign should also be upset that the team's nickname is the Warriors. I guess the biblical sign complainer isn't offended by using a Native American as the team's mascot.

Griffin is the new #1 in the latest Georgia High School AAAA Football rankings. The take over the top perch from defending state champ Tucker, which for the second straight regular season was blasted by Marist.

And here's an interesting fact from this week's rankings report in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, nationally-ranked Grayson, which remains #2 this week in AAAAA, has been tied or trailed in the fourth quarter in three of its five wins.

A lot of streaks ended Friday night as two-time defending AA champ Buford lost 28-21 to Lovett. The Lovett win stopped the Wolves 32-game overall win streak and 49-game regular season win streak, plus their 58-game region win streak. The AJC reports that Lovett raced to a 28-7 lead and then hung on.

North Gwinnett high school football fans are probably still celebrating today after the team's 14-11 victory over nationally-ranked and three-time defending Alabama state champ Prattville. Check-out the game story from the Gwinnett Daily-Post. The game was part of the Progressive Football Challenge in Suwanee, Georgia. In the first game, USA Today's #2 team, Byrnes (Duncan, SC) beat Central Gwinnett 43-7.
